Duck Lander Tribe I want to talk with you about honkers, the king of the dry feed hunt and honker calls. We all love to see those big black feet unfold and point at the spread. Those big 747s are a blast to work. I figured I would address one of the most common questions we get from our Tribe members. What goose call do I need? We are here to make your hunts better, and help you put more geese on the strap and dinner table.
The best way to narrow down the goose call selection is deciding if you are a new caller, an experienced caller or in between? A short reed that doesn't lend it self to your skill set will drive you crazy and make it hard to improve. Calling can be tough to learn, we don't want you to make it harder than it needs to be.
New callers need a longer call 100% percent of the time, like our Greater. The added call length helps with creating a little back pressure and your hands are not as important to perfect on the call.
The more experienced callers should look at the midsized calls, G45 and Fifty/50. These are the do all calls, the everyday day killers after you get past the beginner stage of calling. The midsized calls will help with speed and not manipulation.
The ultra short calls are the hardest to run but the fastest. You need to be well versed to run them, but they offer the most speed and range.
After that we could go into what size geese do you hunt, big Greaters with that low slow honk, interiors in the 8-10 pound range or the little geese that run big bunches. Well save that for another post!
